Stuart first became aware of Tai Chi in the early 80s when he was involved with oil exploration in China. As a result he attended Tai Chi classes in central London in 1981 but had to give them up due to frequent long spells of working overseas. After returning to work in London in 1987 he attended adult education classes in the Cheng Man Ch’ing style of Tai Chi. Nigel Sutton, a world-renowned tai chi expert now living in Malaysia, had trained the instructor of this class. At the end of his second year of training he was invited to join Nigel’s own tai chi association; Zhong-Ding Traditional Chinese Martial Arts Association. He studied various tai chi based subjects at Zhong-Ding including; Broad Sword (Dao), San Feng Jian, Push Hands, Short staff, the Fan, San Shou and Da Lu, and is now a certified instructor of the Zhong Ding Traditional Chinese Martial Arts Association.
In 2001 he attended the first UK based instructors course on Dr Paul Lam’s Tai Chi for Health, and is now certified to teach this modified Sun style of tai chi. This system has been used with recovering heart patients in Hastings, Bexhill and Rye areas since 2005, and has been featured on BBC’s Newsroom South East.
Stuart trained with Zhong-Ding until his move to East Sussex in 2002 and now represents Zhong Ding through his 1066 Tai Chi Club. He currently runs classes in Hastings, Bexhill and Rye and holds occasional seminars with visiting teachers from the Far East.
In April 2007 Stuart began training with Jayne Storey and is now an accredited Chi-PowerTM Golf coach, applying tai chi and eastern principles to improve people’s Golf.
