Falls Prevention |
|
The risk of falls increases with age for most people. Falls often result in injuries such as fractures and can even result in fatalities.
Health professionals are finally coming to realize something that Tai Chi practitioners have known for many years, practicing Tai Chi improves your balance and strength.
Through the low impact exercise and form practice people quickly improve their balance, strength and stability.
Results of recent research into falls prevention can be found on Dr Paul Lam’s Tai Chi for Health website, www.taichiproductions.com/articles/display.php?articleid=69
Both Stuart and Ian are certified to teach Dr Lam’s Tai Chi for Health programs, including his Tai Chi for Arthritis program which is ideal for older people or people with mobility problems and people recovering from injuries.
This program is supported by Arthritis Care UK: www.taichiforarthritis.com/Arthritiscaresupport.htm
All classes are taught in a friendly non-stressful manner with all participants encouraged to work safely within their own physical limits and comfort zones.
One of the first things we teach in our Tai Chi classes is how to walk. .
Very few people have been taught how to walk correctly, have you?
Most people do not actually walk, but do a form of “controlled falling”. They taught themselves this as toddlers when, after discovering how to crawl, they finally manage to stand up by holding on to something and then letting go and grabbing hold of something else before they fall. Eventually they manage to control this falling action so it looks fairly smooth and passes for walking. However, they may well be pounding all their body weight into the ground through the heel of their foot as they lean into a forward step, thus damaging the knee and hip over a period of time.
How many of you can flex your ankles? Rigid or stiff ankles contribute significantly towards falls.
Some of the Tai Chi exercises will help you to recover a degree of flexibility in your ankles.
Come to a class and learn how to improve your strength, mobility and stability in a friendly, easy and relaxed manner. |
